Stories From the Field

In February 2011, Missions Ministries accompanied a team to the colonias. This team was building two houses during the trip. Due to very windy conditions, the team decided to build to complete one home build each day, instead of completing both houses over a two-day period.

Many times during home-builds in the colonias, the fathers of the families we build for are not present during the construction of the home because they must report to their jobs in town or else be fired. During the home-build on the first day, only the mother and children were on the work site, since the father had to work. The father had the next day off work, but the home was already fully complete on the first day, so he could not help us build. The father returned from work that first day just in time for the dedication ceremony of the finished home. He had an opportunity to thank the team and relay his gratitude for this gift.

The next day the construction team traveled to the second worksite to build and complete the second home for another family in need. Again, the father of this family could not join the team to build due to work obligations. Unbeknownst to us, the father of the family that received the first home the previous day showed up at the second build site on the second day to help build the home for the next family. This absolutely warmed our hearts because families typically do not help build for other families, yet this father was so deeply moved from the blessing of a home the previous day that he wanted to offer his time to help build for the second family. He stayed with the team the entire day.

At the end of the day when the construction of the second home was complete, we gathered to dedicate this home. The family could barely speak through their emotions. Watching this family receive such an incredible blessing as well as watching the father of the first home bless this other family was an unforgettable memory.
